Traveling With Your Pet

Hello furry parents!

This one is for you. As a dog owner, I found it incredibly difficult to find information on what is needed to travel with your pet, so I put together a guide where you can find the information you need to travel with your fur baby internationally.

Each airline has its own travel requirements so I recommend checking the airline you are traveling with for all the specifics. Also, each destination has requirements as well and you should research them individually. You can find those requirements on the USDA website linked here.

Some things to keep in mind: your dog must be 12 -16 weeks old to travel (depending on the airline). Domestic policies are different than international ones.

  1. Find an accredited veterinarian near you. Not every vet is accredited with the USDA, and only those who are will be able to fill out the travel form for your dog.

    Search vet here.

  2. Book your dog’s flight. Each airline has a different pet fee. Jetblue’s fee is $125 each way. Delta’s fee is $200 each way. Once you have a travel date, book your appointment with the accredited vet (WITHIN THE AIRLINE’S REQUIREMENT WINDOW.)

  3. Check the timeframe for each airline. For JetBlue, these documents need to be completed within 10 days before travel.

  4. International health certificate. This certificate is provided to you by the accredited veterinarian who certifies that your dog has his vaccines up to date. This is a charge of $150 - $200 depending on the vet. Form Attached.

  5. Rabies Vaccine. Up-to-date rabies vaccine.

  6. Microchip. This is a requirement for international travel only and most veterinarians are able to do it. It is a non-invasive procedure.

  7. Buy TSA TSA-approved pet carrier. Again, this can vary by airline.

For Jetblue, the dimensions are: “Your pet carrier cannot exceed 17" L x 12.5" W x 8.5" H (43.18 cm L x 31.75 cm W x 21.59 cm H) and the combined weight of your pet and the carrier must not exceed 20 pounds.”

    For Delta: maximum dimensions of 18” x 11” x 11.

Please keep in mind that pet travel policies can change and its your responsibility to check the USDA website and the CDC as well as the airline you are traveling with.
